Lessons from my lost phone Charger
I was such in a hurry to get there even though I knew it meant getting home late. I was going to see a client who owes me money for a job I did for him. Have been working as a creative writing lately, it’s not been all rosy with me coming up with four articles every week. Getting to Johns place after so much work of finding my way, I discovered he had free WIFI. Trust me it doesn’t come every day in a country like ours. So I simply took out my phone charger, plugged and turn on my phone wifi and my phone started updating. 2GB no be joke at all for Naija.
Meanwhile, we were discussing my paycheck arrival which was long overdue. This time it was past 6 pm already, nightlife in Benin city isn’t always the most amazing. “I want to go,” I said, I unplugged my phone, we shook hands and I Left knowing fully well that a scary traffic jam is ahead of me.
A last I got home, freshened up and settled down to work only to discover my phone charger was missing. Geez, that evening was messed up, I called my neighbours to ask for a spare, none of them had one. I set out the next day to get another without the option of buying another since getting a good one is quite expensive, besides I didn’t see the need since I will only be without a charger for only a weekend.
Talking about friends and family, I have a lot of them being a very happy person putting a smile on everyone that comes in contact with. I took it as a challenge not to stop until I got a phone charger from some family member or a friend. Picked up my phone and started dialling one number after another until there was no one to call anymore.
As time passes it became so clear I wasn’t going to get one from my friends online or through call so, I decided to visit my neighbours and close friends in my neighbourhood whom I couldn’t reach via calls. Guess what I finally got one from Tochi, a young lady living adjacent my house. Though it wasn’t charger very fast I was glad I finally got one after more than a 100 try. You won’t believe how much joy I felt when I got it!!
LESSONS
- Surprisingly to me in this unlike my previous sales attempts I wasn’t scared of rejection. When a friend or a neighbour gave me a NO for an answer I simply move on to the next one. I was not tired, worried or depressed knowing someone I knew was going to say “NO”.
- Knowing what I wanted showed me where to look. I was definite about what I wanted, not just running around the whole place as I do sometimes. I wasn’t going to settle for less, it was either the phone charger or nothing else.
- Trying things out makes your decision clearer. Asking a friend or a neighbour for the phone charger was one piece of the puzzle, knowing which friend to meet up with next was another. Just speaking to a friend about with I wanted, even when I get a big fat NO I get referrals. The person will almost always tell me who to meet next.
Those are my phone charger lessons, hope you enjoyed reading it. Thank you very much for stopping by and big thanks to Ire Aderinokun for making me write.
